Configuring the KLXCDI

Glossary Item Box

From the main window, click on button "Configure".  This will open the configuration form shown below:

Whenever DashProJr gets connected to the KLXCDI, the red label at the right disappears and the controls in the main area of the window take their value from the CDI internal memory.  Changing the values in those controls when DashProJr is not in communication with the CDI has no effect at all.  Changing them when DashProJr is in communication with the CDI will take effect immediately.

Note1: It is not possible to make a change while the engine is running.  DashProJr will show you a message to that effect if you attempt to do so.

Note2: You can go back to the main window, or other windows you might have open, while still leaving the configuration window open.

Controls definition

- Soft cutoff, Hard cutoff:

The stock OEM CDI implements a semi gradual ignition cutoff: between 10500 and 11000 rpm it produces only half of the ignition pulses.  Above 11000 rpm the ignition is completely cutoff.  The PaRay KLXCDI can be configured with the same kind of gradual cutoff, with the rpm setpoints that you decide.

The box labelled "Soft Ignition Cutoff RPM" in the picture above enables you to select the starting point for the ignition cutoff.  The one below it, labelled "Hard cutoff +RPM" is used to specify how far above the soft cutoff the ignition is completely turned off.  It is possible to define a step cutoff (as opposed to gradual like the OEM) by setting this control at zero.

- Sidestand out shutdown:

The stock OEM CDI cuts the ignition off when the following three conditions are met: the sidestand is deployed, the clutch lever is released and the transmission is not in neutral.  This is a safety feature that many KLX owners disable by shorting the wires connecting the sidestand switch.  With the KLXCDI, this safety can also be disabled by unchecking the box labelled "Shutdown on sidestand out while in gear"Do this at your own risk!

- Hotwiring protection:

The KLX main switch (also called the "ignition key") has a resistor in its barrel as an antitheft measure.  If the CDI does not detect the presence of this resistor, it will not produce ignition pulses and the motorcycle will not start.   You can disable this protection with the KLXCDI by unchecking the box labelled "Use hotwiring protection".  Do this only if you intend to change your main switch and don't want to bother installing a dummy resistor in your circuit.
